Self-Care Isn't Selfish. And Neither Is Creating Space.
Reclaiming your home as an act of love for yourself.
For years, I believed that taking time for myself was selfish.
I thought that the right way to live was to give everything to everyone else first, and then, if there was anything left over, maybe take a little something for myself. I thought this was noble. I thought this was what good mothers and good partners and good people did.
What it actually produced was a depleted version of me who had very little real warmth or presence to offer anyone, because there was nothing left.
I've written before about how this realization changed my understanding of self-care. But today I want to talk about how it changed my understanding of my home.
Your home is part of how you care for yourself
We don't usually think of tidying or decluttering as self-care. It sounds like chores. It sounds like obligation. It sounds like something you do because you have to, not because it restores you.
But here's what I've come to believe: a space that feels calm, that you can breathe in, that greets you gently at the end of a long day rather than immediately demanding something from you, that is a form of care for yourself. A real one.
Creating space in your home is an act of saying: I deserve to come home to something that restores me. My peace matters. My comfort in my own environment matters.
Why we feel guilty about this
Many of us feel guilty putting energy toward our own comfort. There are always other things to do, always other people who need something, always priorities that seem more legitimate.
But a version of you who is constantly depleted by her environment has less to give everyone else. Taking 20 minutes to clear your bedroom, to create one calm space for yourself, is not taking from anyone. It's filling yourself up so you can keep showing up. That's not selfish. That's sustainable.
One small self-care declutter
I want to invite you to identify one area of your home that, if it were cleared and calm, would genuinely improve your daily experience. Maybe it's your bedside table. Maybe it's the bathroom counter. Maybe it's the chair where you sit with your morning coffee.
Clear it. Not for anyone else. For you. And then notice how it feels to care for yourself in this way.
That feeling is allowed. You are allowed to have it. You matter in your own home. 😊

''I highly recommend her for your
next organizational project!''
''Everyone needs a non-judgmental “best friend” who will work shoulder-to-shoulder with you as you work toward your organizational goals. Julie is that best friend. In the kindest and gentlest way, Julie helped me work through a large project in smaller, more manageable tasks. She kept me focused on the task at hand, dealing with both the physical and emotional attachment I had with some of the items I had held on to for much too long. Whether it’s a short-term or long-term project, Julie can help you get to the finish line! I highly recommend her for your next organizational project!'' - Kathy

''She opened my mind to new tools and strategies into my daily life''
''My experience with Julie was incredible. She is a kind, calming, safe space. I enjoyed the exercise we did together. It really help me view my emotions from a different perspective. She knew what questions to ask and how to help me analyze my feelings. She’s educated in what she does. I would love to do it again with her!! She opened my mind to new tools and strategies into my daily life. ❤️❤️❤️''- Kate

''It quickly gave me perspective on how I allow my emotions take control''
''The exercise was quick and effective. It quickly gave me perspective on how I allow my emotions take control. It’s interesting how I had immediate answers to the questions I was asked. I can only speak for myself, but this changed my thoughts for that day and I was present. I did continue to think about the exercise the following day and tried to remember how I felt when I answered the questions. I believe it was effective. I plan on using that exercise or at least remember what I answered when I feel like I’m spiraling or overthinking my thoughts'' - Maritza

''I feel about myself and take care of myself is related to so many aspects of my life, including my relationships and decluttering my home.''
''Being in this community with Julie’s guidance has helped me to understand about Self Care and Self Love, two concepts that were very foreign to me. I get it know, and I’m learning more all the time about how the way I feel about myself and take care of myself is related to so many aspects of my life, including my relationships and decluttering my home.'' - Laura
