What Nobody Tells You About Decluttering in Perimenopause

Your brain, your home, and your energy are all changing. Here's a gentler approach.

If you've been finding it harder to make decisions lately, harder to focus, harder to find the motivation to deal with the stuff that's been building up, and you're somewhere in your 40s or early 50s, I want to offer you some context.

Because I hear from women almost every week who are beating themselves up about this. Who feel like they used to have it more together. Who wonder what happened to the version of themselves that could power through a project and see it through.

And I want to say: your brain may genuinely be changing. And nobody is talking about it enough.

What's actually happening

During perimenopause, fluctuating hormones affect cognitive function in ways that are real and significant but rarely discussed in the context of home organization. Memory, focus, and the ability to process multiple pieces of information at once, the very skills that decluttering requires, can all shift during this season.

For women who already have ADHD or tendencies toward it, this can feel like the wheels are coming off completely. For women who have always been highly organized and capable, it can feel deeply disorienting. Both experiences make complete sense.

And then there's the fatigue. Not tired-from-a-busy-day fatigue. The bone-deep, no-reserve fatigue that makes everything, including deciding what to do with a pile of papers, feel enormous. If this is you, I want you to know: you're not imagining it.

What this means for your home

This is a season to be gentler with yourself and your systems. The elaborate organizing method you could maintain at 35 may genuinely not be the right fit at 48. That's not failure. That's your life changing, and your approach needing to change with it.

Simpler systems. Lower bars. More forgiveness. These are not signs of giving up. They are signs of wisdom. Of adapting to where you actually are instead of where you used to be.

A gentler approach for this season

If you're decluttering in perimenopause, work in shorter sessions than you think you need. Seriously, shorter. Make smaller decisions and celebrate them fully. Don't tackle sentimental items when you're already at an emotional low. And please, please don't use the current state of your home as evidence that something is wrong with you.

You are in a transition. A significant one. And your home can weather it with you. Things will look different on the other side, because you will too. 💕

P.S. Has this season of life affected your home in ways you didn't expect? I'd love to hear about it.

I help you reclaim your home from clutter, so you can find ease and live your life with joy. I am your Professional Decluttering Life Coach, Wellness Facilitator, and Trifecta Alchemy Practitioner.

I was where you are, I felt completely overwhelmed by clutter. No matter how hard I tried, I couldn’t get ahead, and the piles kept growing along with my frustration.

  • Why does decluttering seem easy for everyone but me?

  • Why do I feel embarrassed to invite people over?

  • Why am I so exhausted and unworthy?

  • When will it finally get easier?

It wasn’t until I discovered the power of self-care and simple tools that everything changed. By prioritizing myself, I found the energy to create a peaceful, organized home.

Welcome to my little corner of serenity!

Testimonials

''I highly recommend her for your

next organizational project!''

''Everyone needs a non-judgmental “best friend” who will work shoulder-to-shoulder with you as you work toward your organizational goals. Julie is that best friend. In the kindest and gentlest way, Julie helped me work through a large project in smaller, more manageable tasks. She kept me focused on the task at hand, dealing with both the physical and emotional attachment I had with some of the items I had held on to for much too long. Whether it’s a short-term or long-term project, Julie can help you get to the finish line! I highly recommend her for your next organizational project!'' - Kathy

''She opened my mind to new tools and strategies into my daily life''

''My experience with Julie was incredible. She is a kind, calming, safe space. I enjoyed the exercise we did together. It really help me view my emotions from a different perspective. She knew what questions to ask and how to help me analyze my feelings. She’s educated in what she does. I would love to do it again with her!! She opened my mind to new tools and strategies into my daily life. ❤️❤️❤️''- Kate

''It quickly gave me perspective on how I allow my emotions take control''

''The exercise was quick and effective. It quickly gave me perspective on how I allow my emotions take control. It’s interesting how I had immediate answers to the questions I was asked. I can only speak for myself, but this changed my thoughts for that day and I was present. I did continue to think about the exercise the following day and tried to remember how I felt when I answered the questions. I believe it was effective. I plan on using that exercise or at least remember what I answered when I feel like I’m spiraling or overthinking my thoughts'' - Maritza

''I feel about myself and take care of myself is related to so many aspects of my life, including my relationships and decluttering my home.''

''Being in this community with Julie’s guidance has helped me to understand about Self Care and Self Love, two concepts that were very foreign to me. I get it know, and I’m learning more all the time about how the way I feel about myself and take care of myself is related to so many aspects of my life, including my relationships and decluttering my home.'' - Laura
