10 Rules I Never Break When Working with Clients
The principles behind every Creating Space session.
I've been inside a lot of homes. Mostly over Zoom, and some in person. I've seen a lot of piles. I've sat with a lot of women, virtually and face to face, surrounded by things that have been waiting years for a decision.
And over all of that time, working with all of those women, I've built a set of principles I come back to every single time. These aren't rules in the traditional sense. They're the foundation of what I believe makes this work actually work. And I wanted to share them with you today, because they're yours to use too.
1. We never judge the state of the space
The home I walk into on day one is not a measure of the person I'm working with. Clutter accumulates for real reasons, hard seasons, busy lives, health challenges, grief, or just the way life goes sometimes. My job is to help, not to comment on how things got there.
2. We start where we are
Not where we think we should be. Not where the before-and-after photos suggest we should be. Where we actually are today, with the energy and time and capacity we actually have right now.
3. We never touch someone else's things without permission
Decluttering is deeply personal. I don't move, donate, or make decisions about anything that isn't clearly mine to decide about. Shared spaces require conversation, not assumptions.
4. Something is always better than nothing
Five minutes counts. One cleared shelf counts. One bag of donations counts. Progress doesn't have a minimum size requirement.
5. We never skip the break
Decluttering is physically and emotionally tiring. Breaks are part of the process, not interruptions to it. Honoring your energy matters.
6. We celebrate every single win
Cleared the junk drawer? We celebrate. Donated one bag? We celebrate. Made a decision about something you've been avoiding for a year? We absolutely celebrate that.
7. Perfection is never the goal
Functional, calm, and workable are the goals. A perfect home is not a real home.
8. The system has to work for the person, not the other way around
If a system isn't sticking, it's the wrong system. Not a failure of willpower. We find a different approach.
9. We always sit in the finished space
After clearing and organizing, we pause. You need to feel the difference. That feeling is what motivates you to keep going. It's also what you deserve to enjoy.
10. You are always the expert on your own life
I can offer suggestions, ideas, and frameworks. But you know your home, your family, and your needs better than I ever will. My job is to support your decisions, not make them for you.
These are the rules I come back to every time. Every single one of them comes from watching women transform their homes by leading with grace instead of judgment. 💕

I was where you are, I felt completely overwhelmed by clutter. No matter how hard I tried, I couldn’t get ahead, and the piles kept growing along with my frustration.
Why does decluttering seem easy for everyone but me?
Why do I feel embarrassed to invite people over?
Why am I so exhausted and unworthy?

''I highly recommend her for your
next organizational project!''
''Everyone needs a non-judgmental “best friend” who will work shoulder-to-shoulder with you as you work toward your organizational goals. Julie is that best friend. In the kindest and gentlest way, Julie helped me work through a large project in smaller, more manageable tasks. She kept me focused on the task at hand, dealing with both the physical and emotional attachment I had with some of the items I had held on to for much too long. Whether it’s a short-term or long-term project, Julie can help you get to the finish line! I highly recommend her for your next organizational project!'' - Kathy

''She opened my mind to new tools and strategies into my daily life''
''My experience with Julie was incredible. She is a kind, calming, safe space. I enjoyed the exercise we did together. It really help me view my emotions from a different perspective. She knew what questions to ask and how to help me analyze my feelings. She’s educated in what she does. I would love to do it again with her!! She opened my mind to new tools and strategies into my daily life. ❤️❤️❤️''- Kate

''It quickly gave me perspective on how I allow my emotions take control''
''The exercise was quick and effective. It quickly gave me perspective on how I allow my emotions take control. It’s interesting how I had immediate answers to the questions I was asked. I can only speak for myself, but this changed my thoughts for that day and I was present. I did continue to think about the exercise the following day and tried to remember how I felt when I answered the questions. I believe it was effective. I plan on using that exercise or at least remember what I answered when I feel like I’m spiraling or overthinking my thoughts'' - Maritza

''I feel about myself and take care of myself is related to so many aspects of my life, including my relationships and decluttering my home.''
''Being in this community with Julie’s guidance has helped me to understand about Self Care and Self Love, two concepts that were very foreign to me. I get it know, and I’m learning more all the time about how the way I feel about myself and take care of myself is related to so many aspects of my life, including my relationships and decluttering my home.'' - Laura
