How Decluttering Transformed My Life: From Chaos to Calm
Have you ever looked around your home and felt completely overwhelmed? That was me a few years ago. As a single mom with two daughters (whom I lovingly call “the beans”), I felt buried under the weight of stuff. Toys, clothes, papers—it all seemed to multiply overnight. Despite my best efforts to keep up, every time I cleared a space, the clutter crept back in. I felt stuck. Maybe you’ve felt that way, too.
Then, something shifted. I heard a quote in a decluttering community that changed everything: “We are not our stuff.”
It stopped me in my tracks. My home wasn’t a reflection of who I truly was—it was simply a collection of things. I realized it was time to let go of what no longer served me or my family.

Painting My Way to Change
My first step wasn’t decluttering; it was painting my fireplace. Feeling stuck for so long, when I picked up that paintbrush and turned my brown fireplace white, it felt like a breath of fresh air. The energy of the whole room shifted. Suddenly, I felt empowered—I could make changes. That little spark of confidence led to more.
Next, the girls and I painted our bedrooms, transforming them into spaces that truly felt like ours. It wasn’t just about the colors on the walls; it was about creating rooms that reflected who we were and the life we wanted. Once our spaces felt authentic, the urge to declutter naturally followed. That’s when my decluttering journey truly began.
Why Decluttering is More Than Just Stuff
Decluttering isn’t just about clearing physical items. For me, it was about creating space for what truly matters—my daughters, our time together, and the peace of mind that comes from not feeling overwhelmed by “stuff.”
The same quote that inspired me to start also led me to train as a decluttering coach. Initially, I wanted to learn enough to organize our home. But I fell in love with the process so much that I started “Creating Space with Julie” to help others do the same. It’s funny how, when we let go of what no longer serves us, we create room for something even better.
If you’re wondering if it’s possible for you, too, I want to assure you—it absolutely is. You don’t have to do it all at once. Start small. Begin with one drawer or one shelf. Slowly but surely, you’ll see that you’re not just transforming your space, but your entire life.
